Legend of Tagoloan* By: Totong Factura It is logical to believe that the first inhabitants of our
island settled in the mountains. For centuries rivers in these mountains were depositing alluvia in their
valleys, which in time became plains. The bigger the rivers, the larger the plains. Settlers,
seeking warmer climates, moved down to these plains. For economic reasons they established their communities
close to the rivers and the sea. Most of the early inhabitants of this town were natives from Bukidnon.
Juan Linguman, who once served as a “capitan” of San Martin, died only a few years before the last war. The origin of the
name of the town was the result of curiosity of a priest. In his desire to locate the head of the river
which when flooded rose by up to four meters, causing destruction to life and property, he traced its source far into the
interior. After weeks of climbing the hills and mountains, on foot and by horse, he finally came upon his
goal. He found the headspring under a huge rock. It was so well hidden that it defied
discovery for a long time. He called it TAGO-OLOHAN, from tago, concealed, and olohan
, head source. Later, it was changed to its present form, perhaps from the difficulty of the Spanish priest
to pronounce Visayan words. (Adapted from an article written by the late Mayor Antonio T. Cosin, first published in 1971). When the stalwart
horse and the reliable carabao were the only means of transportation wayfarers and traders grazed their animals at the public
plaza, in vacant lots or along the streets at night. Tethers were lost. On some occasions
some of the animals and their loads were lost. This gave a little notoriety to this town when the victims
remarked that it was called Tagoloan precisely from the tago, to hide, and loan, to load; the implication
being that this was a town of thieves. There was probably some justification for this derisive etymology.(Ibid). Another version brings
to mind Errol Flynn and the buccaneers. Muslim prirates and marauders eluded their pursuers by hiding in
the mangrove swamps by the mouth of the river. There they divided and transferred their loot to other boats
to avoid capture. Thus the name: from tago, to hide and loan, to load. (Source: Mr. Benjamin
Dagus). *This article was taken in its entirety from the Casiño 1st Grand Reunion (May 23-24, 1987)
Genealogy Book published by Thaddeus Bautista y Avanceña.

June 27, 2010 After much anticipation and over two years of preparation,
the Casiño Clan reunion became a reality on May 29-30, 2010, in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines,
the ancestral home of CASIÑO since the 1700s. To capsulize the 300-year
history and origin of the Casiños, it started with the migration of three Realistas – Eugenio, Loraiz and Andaliya
– from the province of Bohol. To avoid the harsh treatment by the Spaniards of Filipinos,
they escaped the province and settled in Tagoloan. In order to protect their indentity,
they changed the name Realista to Casiño – coined from their mother’s name Caseñas.
The settlement of the Casiños in Tagoloan produced over twenty thousand descendants. On
the morning of May 29, 2010, over 5,000 Casiños (surpassing Guinness World Record 2,500+) landed in the town
of Tagoloan, coming from the United States, Australia, South Korea, Manila and Cebu,
provinces of Butuan, Bukidnon, Davao and Cotabato. Some came by
car taking the risk of being ambushed on the road by insurgent elements in the province of Cotabato.
Agaws, were very glad to be reunited, reacquainted, and reconnected with their long lost relatives. Saturday, May 29th, started with registration followed by official grand opening of the reunion, cutting
of ribbon by Mrs. Nice Valdehuesa Casiño Yap, one of the elders of the clan (90 years old) assisted by Rep. Teodoro
A. Casiño, a Party-List Congressman from the House of Representatives, Quezon City, Philippines. This was followed
by a dance depicting the plight of Casiño ancestors from the province of Bohol. A
motorcade from Tagoloan to Bugo and Villanueva followed the rest of the program in the afternoon and culminating the day with
Fiesta Casiño in the evening. Highlight of the evening was a fashion show of couture evening wear
designed by Edgar Casiño San Diego, one of the top fashion designers in Manila. Sunday, May
30th, opened with a special thanksgiving mass officiated by Father Patrick
Casiño from Manila. The rest of the day was spent with Holohisgot (renewal of family ties
and reacquainting), parlor games, followed by distribution of awards in the evening
and culminating with a dance. The memorable event could not have been a great success
without the hard work and dedication by Raul “Lalet” Casiño (President), Dionisio “Dongdong”
Casiño (Vice-President), Leonardo “Boy” Casiño (Treasurer), and Secretariat/Research:
Kerenzo Ricardo Vicente “Riki” Casiño Lee, Dante “Pradis” E. Casiño, Florante “Loloy”
Casiño, and Gerardo “Dodong” G. Casiño.
Special thanks to Roberto “Bob”
Adecer’s, genealogy website: www.casino.tribalpages.com - without which the Casiño Genealogy Book would not have
been possible. Lastly, but not least, I am happy to be a part of the event by contributing my piece of the action through
my website: www.casino-sa-tagoloan.com – a site which provided the start of the reunion by communicating with the Casiños
from all around the world. Wilfredo “Fred” A. Casiño

Komusta na! As 2009 is winding down with only 2 months to go, we need to
refresh our goals and issues for the upcoming Casiño May 2010 Reunion. 2010 is just around the corner.
Before we know it May is upon us. Let’s go over the list and perhaps you can offer some help
or advise or whatever you can to make this event a great success! 1. As many of you may have already
been aware, we are asking everyone to donate money, time and talent. There
are going to be various activities during the 2-day festivities that will require money and manpower. As
of this writing, P152,419 have been collected and P57,775 have been pledged, or a total of P210,194. In
addition, P4,500 prize money was donated by friends of the clan. We are asking you and your
friends to please give to this noble cause. 2. Many of you may have been away for a long time and are unaware of the conditions and circumstances surrounding
a number of our less fortunate igagaws back home, especially in the nearby communities of Tagoloan.
There is a great need for medical and dental assistance. Reading glasses, medicines,
vaccinations, even clothing are very much needed. As suggested, some of you who are in the medical and
dental fields can offer a free clinic to our less fortunate relatives and many of us can well afford to give clothing.
3. The Casiño Family Tree is close to completion, however there are still some
families, especially those living in some remote areas and have no access to computer that need to be reached out and to gather
their info for input in the Casiño Tribalpages. This is vital in the decision
to either print a book and/or do a CD/DVD of the family tree, and most importantly, how much financing
this would involved. 4. Inspite of the great success of the 1987 grand reunion, there were negative
experiences that need to be addressed. Some relatives were disappointed because they
were ignored and snobbed by the privileged few who only mingled with their own kind. One entry in the Casiño
website commented that the reunion is only for the “rich and famous”. This type of sentiment
is not acceptable. Please try to make an effort to associate with the rest of the clan.
Discrimination is out of the question. We are all in this together.
Togetherness, reunification, renewal of our ties, reunion – that’s what this is all about! 5. The motto contest is coming down to a close and the winner should be declared in a month or so. The
selected motto will be shown on the streamers and will be incorporated in the ads and other invitational materials.
Todate, invitation to write a Casiño hymn has not yet been answered. Please
give this a serious thought and send us your song. This carries a prize tag of P5,000. 6.
Serious thought has been put into erecting an obelisk to commemorate the legacy of the Casiño clan in Tagoloan.
Obviously, this project will require financing for the design and construction. Another
consideration is the site. 7. Casiño Foundation - a tall order
but brilliant idea! All of the above are pressing issues as far as financing is concern, except the
Casiño Foundation, which may have to be addressed after the reunion unless someone is willing
to pay for the start-up cost. Daghan salamat,Wilfredo (Fred) Acac Casiño

Update –
July 9, 2009 - In a recent Tagoloan meeting attended by Sister May Placid (Dean – Sta Scholastica’s
College, Manila), Rikki Casiño Lee, Dodong Casiño, Titus Casiño Abejo and Leonardo Boy Casiño,
the date of the CASIÑO REUNION is now curved in stone – MAY 29-30, 2010.
In other developments, streamers announcing the reunion have been posted in various towns.
While gathering of information for updating the family tree continues, publication of a book for
distribution at the reunion is in the offing. The book may be on a different format from the 1987 version,
but it will serve the purpose for convenience and quick access for family information. In addition to the progress that has been made with regard to funding (published
previousy) of the reunion, planning and budgeting for several activities have already been set in motion. Some
of the activities include, facilities, food, prices, construction of an obelisk, medical and dental clinics and more depending
on how much funds are available. A complete financial report will soon follow. Wilfredo

Looking Forward to the Casiño Reunion June 9, 2009 (Tuesday USA) To All My Casiño Relatives: How blessed we are to have the opportunity of reuniting with
each other. It's rare that each and everyone of us is moved to reconnect with other relatives. The
Casino Cruise Reunion in 2008 served as a stepping stone to bring about the most awaited event of the 2010 Casino Reunion
in Tagoloan. I'm proud to be among the few relatives who started organizing the 2nd big reunion in Tagoloan. With that meeting
at the cruise, Casino websites were born. They are the www.casino-sa-tagoloan.com founded by our cousin,
Wilfredo(Fred) Casino and later www.casino.tribalpages.com founded by Bob Adecer. Due to these websites,
the communication among relatives increased on a global level. Thanks to the internet, our technology has never been better.
As the year 2010 approaches, let's continue to keep in touch via e-mail and prepare ourselves
for the coming reunion in Tagoloan which is officially on May 29-30, 2010. This date was decided by the majority of the Casino
Clan, especially the group in Tagoloan which is our host. Please check your e-mails from our cousin Lalet, who is heading
the group in Tagoloan, as well as Fred Casino of the US. They both keep us updated. Thank you, Fred Casino, for serving the
Casino Clan in the past year. Your website has been very helpful and informative internationally. Your efforts in maintaining
the website are recognized, indeed. Don't forget to visit our website, "casino-sa-tagoloan.com" because that's where
we get the updated news about the clan. Fred is in constant contact with our relatives in Tagoloan. Let's
pray for everybody's good health. Let's ask the Lord our God to bless especially the elderly who wish to attend this long
awaited reunion of 2010. Sincerely, Chollie CASIÑO, ONE OF THE ELDERS IN THE CASINO CLAN OF USA
This is official… “CASIÑO 2010 REUNION” May 29-30, 2010

SURVEY FORM…….. A “Casiño Family Tree” survey form
has been sent out to everyone who has provided me with email address. The form is intended to gather more
information in order to update the family tree and have it ready for distribution to all the relatives at the 2010 reunion
. If you have not given me your email address please sign the “Guestbook”. If
you prefer a hard copy, please include the address where to send the form. Fred Casiño
WELCOME 2009……………….. Goodbye 2008 …….. It’s
time to reflect upon the year 2008. A year which has brought a mixture of hope, encouragement,
nostalgia, a look forward to the future and perhaps a sense of anxiousness for the ushering in of the year 2010. 2008, marked the start of the awareness of Casiño clan 2010 grand reunion
which was conceived in that historic Western Caribbean Carnival Cruise off of Houston, Texas, attended by almost one hundred
Casiños from all over the US, Great Britain and Australia. Out of this Casiño gathering came the creation of two websites – (1)
www.casino-sa-tagoloan.com, which serves as a news-gathering-reaching-out site
and (2) www.casino.tribalpages.com, the Casiño Family Tree. The two sites are cross-linked.
I have never been so excited in my whole life re-acquainting with the current generation of Casiños from all
over the world and at the same time gathering insights of relationships which, for years have been forgotten.
The Casino-sa-Tagoloan site has reached out to over 100 names (all of whom I have never known before) who have signed
the ‘guestbook’ and has published some newsworthy on-goings of the Casiños. The Casiño family tree website, engineered by Bob Adecer, is a stupendous
project, which has covered nearly 20,000 names and still counting. The site has an enormous amount of information
which covers a span of over 300 years of Casiño generations. The two sites are constant reminder of the Casiño clan – who we are, where we came from and where
we’re heading . Let’s look forward to the year 2010 –
the Casiño Grand Reunion #2. The date has been
set, albeit not yet curved in stone - May 2010. Wilfredo (Fred) Acac Casiño
Greetings!!.......to all my Igagaw………………
Merry Christmas and a Happy 2009
These past few months have been very gratifying to have rekindled my sense of
familial ties, which, for years seemed to dwindle down to oblivion. To all of you who have responded to
the Casiño-Sa-Tagoloan website, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks. Your
responses to the “Guestbook” have been very encouraging and opened my world, not only to the
new generation of the CASIÑOS, but also to the past which have skipped my memory. I
hope that you continue to keep in touch and please revisit the website from time to time. Let’s keep
the spirit high and look forward to MAY 2010. For an update………………… In a recent visit by Sister Mary Placid
Abejo to Southern California, she and I discussed the possibility of erecting an obelisk (a smaller version similar to the
Washington monument in Washington, DC) as a memorial to the CASIÑOS of Tagoloan. It would be fitting
if this can be inaugurated on the 2010 reunion. The idea of a memorial is not limited to an obelisk but
is open to other suggestions. FYI - Sr. Mary Placid Abejo is one of the five awardees
of TOFIL (The Outstanding Filipino) for arts and music. The awarding ceremonies will be on Dec. 11, 2008. Wilfred

BREAKING NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!
September
28, 2008
Kick-Off of the Casiño Clan
Grand Reunion at St. Scholastica's College
Cousins, I
took some pictures during the event (by family lines) and I thought of sharing them with you. We all had a nice time,
nice lunch, nice people, nice renewal of familial ties, nice just about everything. Congressman (of Cag de Oro) Rufus
Rodriguez could not come because he was in Cagayan for a very important engagement but he donated a lechon and was represented
by his brother Manny who promised help to clan members encountering serious problems at the NAIA (except those illegal).
Former Congressman (of Cavite) Rene Dragon came with wife and clan member, Clarita (Yaying) Pimentel who, single handedly contributed
about 50 new names to our genealogy book, complete with date and places of birth. Wow ! what a prodigious memory.
Our very loyal clan friend and perrenial guest, USEC Frank Ebdalin of the Dept of Foreign Affairs also came with wife Cor
and a pledge to help clan members with passport troubles. Our emcee was Edmundo (Toti) Casiño. Laughs were
provided by Cecilia (Tata) Valdehuesa-Velasco who arrived with an entire "army" headed by husband, Gen. (Ret.) Jay
Velasco. Sister Lony Abejo narrated the historical background of the Casiño Clan from Baclayon to Tagoloan and
illustrated the major family lines of the Clan. All in all, a very happy time. More news soon. Bob

The origin of CASIÑO…….. (Excerpt
taken from an article titled Baclayon, by Cesario A. Balintag, the Casiño 1st Grand Reunion, May
23-24, 1987, Genealogy Book, published by Thaddeus Bautista Y Avancena) During the
later part of the 17th century two young men wanted by the Spanish authorities for refusing to work under forced
labor, surreptitiously escaped by hiding in the hold of a banca that was leaving for Mindanao one early dawn, at the time
when the authorities were hotly in pursuit of them. Eugenio Realista and his brother Loraiz of Baclayon
town, landed at Baluarte a coastal village near the mouth of the Tagoloan river during the early days of February, the season
for catching the tiny freshwater fish, hipon, near the mouth of the river. The Boholano traders
from Baclayon town bought salted hipon in quantity and placed in large earthen jars that filled the hold of their
banca. For lack of adequate containers, the rest of the salted fish was placed in large cascos on the cobierta
of their banca. The banca that brought a stowaway to Baluarte, left for other coastal
villages in northern Mindanao for their buy and sell business, without the young Eugenio and Loraiz. Eugenio
(and) Loraiz Realista lived on the hospitality of friends. Being hardworking, patient, courteous, thrifty,
and forward looking young men, they easily acquired friends and were taken in as two among them in the community.
They worked on farms that could be had by the asking, and started to accumulate money and property. To
avoid detection and envy by people who knew they were wanted by the Spanish authorities, they changed their family name to
one that sounded similar to the family name of their mother Casenas – into Casiño. Eugenio
got married to a native lass by the name of Alberta Sabio. This was the main trunk of the prestigious CASIÑO
clan of Tagoloan what is now known as San Martin, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, which started with the family name REALISTA
of Baclayon, Bohol.
